The daily work of motherhood is based on collaborative negotiation within the family. It is an experience of trial and error, a continuous, beautiful, and challenging experiment. Linking mother-to-mother, and process-to-process is a fascinating way to extend that notion. I am interested in learning and working with and other mothers from diverse backgrounds in ways that bring our daily interaction with our children into the work.

I am interested in the transgenerational legacy of the mother-child dynamic, in which beliefs, behaviors, and past traumas haunt one generation to the next. In the Motherhood project, I work in collaboration with my two daughters and investigate my role as a mother in the context of the maternal legacy that I inherited. Through experimental and performative explorations in and around the home where I was raised, I reflect on the weight of the past as it is transmitted through me and will continue through my two children.
In the work I use my maternal body as a site for exploring the interdependence of mother-child relationships. The mother is a place in which identities may be blurred, mirrored, or completely absorbed. One may not be able to decipher where the identity of the mother ends and the child begins, and vice versa. In addition, the intimacy and intensity of the relationship creates a power dynamic that is shifting and fluid, and it is not always easy to define. True motivations and intentions are unclear. Through the mediums of photography and video, this work documents my journey through the experience of motherhood, in coming to understand my relationship to my children and my identity as a mother.
My process often involves the act of relinquishing control and recognizing the uncertainty in making collaborative work my children and being a “good” mother to them. I allow my children to make spontaneous creative decisions on how the work will be made as it is in the process of being performed. Through the acceptance of uncertainty and reliance on adapting to the moment, my practice is one of tempting failure, and embracing vulnerability as a mother, and as an artist.
I use dark humor in the work to approach the often taboo subject of ambivalence and the contradictory nature of the maternal relationship – a site of mothering, (s)mothering, creating, disintigrating, needing, desiring, aggrandizing, suppressing, nurturing, and suffering. As I play with the persona of the mother and the mother-as-artist, the work brings up uncomfortable questions about identity, autonomy, and the process of bringing up a child. It also explores the basic question of what “love” is and how it can be fully comprehended or even recognized. These depictions of the maternal experience defy the common reductive and over-sentimentalized representations of motherhood and childhood often presented in our culture.

The Mother House is opening in London this September – the very first art studio with co-produced and flexible childcare model.

The Mother House, it’s a new initiative directed by  Procreate Project in collaboration with Desperate Artwives.  The Mother House is born in response to the urge of “making” within the life-changing experience of motherhood, offering a collaborative yet intimate space to curate artists’ practice whilst ensuring their journey into motherhood is fed in a creative and inclusive way.

THE MOTHER HOUSE IS AN EXPERIMENTAL, DEDICATED CREATIVE SPACE FOR LONDON-BASED MOTHER-ARTISTS TO EXPLORE A LONG TERM DREAM AND MAKE IT A REALITY.

“Mother House is something that has been screaming to be born ever since the Womenhouse at the CalArts in the ´72!” – Deidre Donoghue, M/other Voices Founder.

Over 36 London based artists and their children are coming together for an exploratory month into the intersection between the roles of mother and artist, observing the importance of their impact on private lives and within society.

The Mother House residency is starting the 5th of September 2016 at the IKLECTIK Art Lab in London Waterloo and will provide a familiar context to share and reveal both the challenges and privileges of being a mother. The space will provide the artists with the freedom of working independently or alongside their children and it will also give them the opportunity to work in collaboration with other artists and create a supportive and inspiring network.

This short-term project would demonstrate how a dedicated space provides crucial support for mother artists’ professional development.

This experiment will turn into an artwork itself as a documentary, which will be shown for a final open-house day on the 9th of October, celebrating this journey and exhibiting all the works created during this time.

The first session of this ‘make it happen’ platform of exchange is ‘At-Home’ Colloquy-I . Unlike the Creative Duologue sessions of CCM, to be realised ‘on site’ in Uttarakhand; it is focused on bringing together two mother artists, in association with each other , despite their not meeting in person .The idea is to foster dialogue even where meeting in person is not possible; exchange thoughts through different modes of communication, and develop a body of work.

Duration– The mother artists are free to mutually decide the duration of their at- home project; ranging from one month to one year.

Concept– The ‘At-Home’ Colloquy -I is focused on exchanges of notes and responses to experiences from the ‘maternal’ domain. Inter-cultural or inter-generational dialogues and responses to the maternal are preferred.Points of departure could be ,but are not limited to- the art work/s of one another, exchange of cultural / social aspects of the maternal , objects, icons/ myths/ narratives / personal histories.

Applications are to be sent as duo -artists only, with a pre-conceived collaborative outline structured. Mother Artists working in painting, drawing, photography, installation, sculpture ,performance art, video art and sound art can apply for the collaborative at-home residency. Inter-disciplinary dialogues are welcome. At the end of the residency , each artist should submit a typed artist statement. It should describe the process of collaboration, beginning from the dialogues to the creative works produced. (a format for the same shall be provided). Along with the text, images of the works produced and one original creative work produced during the residency should also be submitted . The submission should be in an A4 size folder only, to be POSTED and shall be a part of The Maternal Chord Archive. Make it Happen

Dear ALL,

Firstly, thanks so much to all of you, for your interest in the CreativeCollaborative Mothers Residency Art Project. There have been both curiosity and questions from your side. They  have made me happy, as well as made me think about making the project more inclusive and possible.

At the outset, ‘to make it happen’ as a mother / artist ,working within parameters of time constraints was the driving point for me ,to start this project. The Open Call for Creative Duologue-I  sprung out of this very need to create, collaborate , interact and also take a short break from one’s own space and roles for a while. Within all of these, the rooted driving force has been ,the desire to continue to create and find meaningful and enriching platforms for exchange and growth. But your enquiries , messages and discussions have made me realise; that amidst the universality of the maternal as an experience, there lay areas of struggle , which can be variants for each one of us.

I am now in the process of reshaping and finding new routes within CCM. I truly wish it enables collaboration and creative production ; despite the variant factors of funding, time zones, ‘maternal identity’ etc. which many of you have discussed with me.

Please watch this space for more information ..coming soon.

Digital drawing, 45.7cm x 38.2cm, 2015

A collaborative drawing, by me and my two sons Naoise (aged 7) Syd (aged 14) Whilst creating this work, I was thinking back to giving birth to my eldest son and becoming a mother. A headless woman giving birth, balances coloured circus balls on her back. I have found that there is no balance or juggling of roles to be found when working as a mother/artist. I carve out time to make with and without my children; mothering informs and inspires my practice.
